Exercising on a quality vibration plate improves muscle strength, bone density, blood circulation, reduces rehabilitation time for a broad range of rehab needs and makes the body leaner and suppler.
What is controlled Whole Body Vibration (cWBV)?
In a conventional training session, only 40% of the muscle fibers are exercised; with controlled Whole Body Vibration or cWBV training that percentage nears the 100% mark. And it is not only the muscle tissue that reacts. Application of cWBV also has a positive effect on tendon tissue, bone tissue, the nervous system and hormonal balances.
Controlled WBV aims to harness the positive effects of WBV, with a fixed and constant amplitude, and a fixed and well-balanced frequency range.
In cWBV, 3-dimensional mechanical vibrations, with the main vector in vertical direction, are transmitted to the body through a vibration plate. With the fitvibe, the frequency of that vibration can be adjusted from 20 to as much as 60 Hz (20 – 60 vibrations per second). The mechanical stimulus produces a stretch reflex in the muscles that depends on the set frequency and that causes involuntary muscle contractions. This means that the muscles react to the vibration by contracting and relaxing automatically. Although this may vary from person to person, frequencies of about 30 Hz and higher cause very intense and highly effective muscle contractions. Frequencies in the lower range are used for relaxing by stimulating the blood circulation.
cWBV on a fitvibe Vibration Plate Training Systems have important advantages compared to conventional training methods:
- Short sessions (average 10-20 minutes per session)
- Rapid results
- Easy to use
- Wide range of benefits
- Applicable where a low threshold is needed
- For young as well as older people
- Extremely versatile – all muscle groups can be trained
Additionally, fitvibe’s Vibration Plate Personal Coach explains and visualizes the right posture for each exercise. fitvibe vibration plates are designed with the user’s safety and health as paramount priorities. All randomized vibrations, like the ones associated with whole body vibration, are excluded. This is also the reason why a well-balanced vibration plate is so important.
Generally spoken, everyone allowed doing sports is allowed training on the fitvibe Vibration Plate. Nevertheless in some specific cases people should take extra care. A complete list of absolute and relative contra-indications can be consulted in the software of every fitvibe device.
Relative contraindications: (use fitvibe Vibration Plate Systems only after consulting a medical doctor):
- Epilepsy
- Cardiac dysrhythmia
- Tumors (in a period 5 years plus after appearing, excluding metastases in the musculoskeletal system)
- M. Parkinson
Absolute contraindications: (do not use fitvibe):
- Acute inflammations, infections and/ or fever
- Acute arthropathy and arthrosis
- Acute rheumatoid arthritis
- Acute migraine
- Postoperative wounds (traumatology, visceral surgery, orthopedics, neural surgery, etc.)
- Implants of the spine
This list is not exhaustive. Check your fitvibe user menu for contraindications.
Applications for the fitvibe Vibration Plate
By holding a position on the vibration plate for a certain time, the body will begin to recruit and activate more and more motor points, to help maintain the contraction. Motor points that are rarely exercised within a particular muscle are now brought into use, perhaps for the first time. Secondly, while the vibrations continue, the motor points that are recruited are forced to contract continuously, time after time, with no appreciable decrease in force output. This allows your muscles to achieve a state of maximum contraction very safely and effectively. The end result is that the entire muscle matures very quickly.
fitvibe Vibration Plate also offers a method of preventing and rehabilitating injuries. Several professional teams have found fitvibe Vibration Plate Training Systems not only to be an integral training tool, but indispensable for rehabilitation. Consult your physical therapist!
Medical Applications
Bone Density
Scientific research has on a number of occasions already demonstrated the effects of loads on our skeleton and on the bone density. In orthopaedics, it is known that bone adjusts its strength to allow for the forces applied to it. Think of astronauts, for example, who lose bone density during their stay in space. The opposite is just as true. The mechanical stimuli transmitted to the bones by the fitvibe Vibration Plate Training Systems ensure that mechanical stresses are placed on the bones efficiently. In combination with the release of hormones such as testosterone, this has a positive effect on the bone density.
Body in Balance
The term proprioception could be described as “the sixth sense”. It is the process by which the brain continuously receives information from all over the body about the positioning and the movement of the body. Proprioceptive information comes primarily from receptors in the muscles, the skin and the joints. Based upon the information coming from these receptors, the body is continually sending reflex corrections back to the muscles. On fitvibe one is continually exposed to tiny movements. The whole balance system is stimulated continuously and from a range of different positions. People will feel more confident in their balance feeling immediately.
Wellness
Fat burning
A recent study with slightly over-weighed people (BMI 27-30) showed that on a period of 8 weeks people lost a significant 6,5% of their fat mass – without changing their daily lifestyle. In the same period of time they’ve built up their muscle mass; And increased muscle mass means a leaner, tighter body!
Cellulites and skin
Improving the perfusion of the blood very rapidly and by strengthening the underlying muscles in a particular area, that’s the strength of fitvibe Vibration Plate. The vibrations are able to do their work at very specific areas. Right where the cellulite is! The vibrations ensure that the muscles underneath the cellulites are trained up, making them stronger and tighter and thereby the skin more taut. The skin will look smoother, with fewer obvious lumps and dimples.
Hormonal release
Hormones are chemical messengers from one cell to another. The function of hormones is to serve as a signal to the target cells. When training on fitvibe Vibration Plates an increased release of some key hormones can be determined. One of these key hormones are growth hormones that are secreted to a greater extent. These hormones stimulate protein synthesis and in so doing help in building up muscle tissue. They also play a part in erythropoiesis, which causes the blood’s O2 transportation capacity to rise. Besides this the growth hormones (especially IGF I) have a direct effect in the stimulation of the lipolysis; causing a reduction of body fat levels. Also neurotrophin – a brain stimulator – is raised under the influence of controlled Whole Body Vibration and the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone are lowered significantly resulting directly in a feeling of relaxation after training session using fitvibe.
Fitness and Sports
Shorts training sessions, high outcome!
Sessions on fitvibe Vibration Plates are fast and pain-free you don’t even have to change into your gym gear! Just 10 minutes a few times a week will help maintain already fit body. To get the same benefits as you would at the gym, you’ll need about double this time to complete a full routine of exercises such as squats, lunges and push-ups.
Increased muscle strength and toning
With fitvibe you will reach even muscles that are seldom activated The whole body is reached Scientific research on con-trolled whole body vibration shows that a larger and more rapid training effect can be achieved in comparison with conventional training methods. Muscles get stronger and rest toning will increase. Besides this it should also be emphasised that – unlike during normal training – stresses acting upon the joints and cartilage are significantly lower which decreases risks on injuries, certainly for non trained people.
Deeper muscles structures
In a conventional training session, only 40% of the muscles fibres are trained. With controlled whole body vibration also the deeper muscles structures are reached and almost 100% of the muscles fibres will be activated.
FAQ
How does a vibration plate work?
The fitvibe vibration plates operate under the principle of Controlled Whole Body Vibration or cWBV. In cWBV, 3-dimensional mechanical vibrations, with the main vector in vertical direction, are transmitted to the body through a vibration plate. With the fitvibe, the frequency of that vibration can be adjusted from 20 to as much as 60 Hz (20 – 60 movements per second). The mechanical stimulus produces a stretch reflex in the muscles. This means that the muscles react to the vibration by contracting and relaxing automatically. Although this may vary from person to person, frequencies of about 30 Hz and higher cause very intense and highly effective muscle contractions. Frequencies in the lower range are used mainly for relaxing by stimulating the blood circulation.
How long has vibration training been around?
Scientists of the former Soviet Union began developing the vibration strength field in the 1970s to train Olympic athletes. Later, they applied it to cosmonauts in and returning from outer space. It has been commercialized since the turn of this century.
Who makes fitvibe?
For over 35 years, GymnaUniphy has developed and manufactured innovative products for the worldwide physiotherapy and wellness markets. It is guided by the latest developments in the field of electronics and mechanics, and by thorough market analyses from over 40 countries. The company is now one of the market leaders in this niche market.
GymnaUniphy is a part of the IMS Group (Innovative Medical Solutions). Its headquarters are located in Bilzen (Belgium). The fitvibe R&D and manufacturing site is located in Berlin, Germany.
When shouldn’t I use a vibration plate?
Anyone who is allowed to do sports can use the fitvibe Vibration Plate at will. But fitvibe’s main advantage is its low threshold, which means that elderly, handicapped or rehabilitating persons can use fitvibe, as well. Still there are a number of absolute and relative restrictions.
How can a fitvibe Vibration Plate Training System help me?
The fitvibe Vibration Plate System is a low impact but highly effective training device, which means that it can be used by most people. It is good for muscles, blood circulation, the skeletal and the nervous system. In addition, it will make you feel better because of the hormonal effects. But beware, fitvibe is not a medicine! Its effects can be compared to sports. It is a device that allows you to train your body, even when your body cannot make a substantial effort. fitvibe is in fact training you! If you have a specific condition, and you wonder whether fitvibe might help, consult you physical therapist or your specialist.
My doctor or fitness centre doesn’t know fitvibe. What can I do about it?
You can always invite your doctor, physical therapist or fitness centre to a fitvibe centre. In addition, you can point them to this leaflet. Or simply print it out!
From what age can I train on a fitvibe Vibration Plate and until what age?
fitvibe is used by people between roughly 7 and 77 years old. The user’s position on the vibration plate is the most important factor. You have to be able to assume the correct positions to absorb the vibrations. This means that you have to be able to follow the guidelines and to assume the correct positions.
Children need to play and engage in sports as much as possible. As their epiphyses are not yet fully developed, natural movements are the best. fitvibe should not be the only or even the most important aspect of their motor development. As for elderly people, there is no real age limit, apart from being able to complete the exercise program, even if it is only at a low frequency.
If I want a “total body work-out”, can I do it in one session?
Indeed you can! On the “select muscle group” screen on the display, you can select a work-out that treats your entire body. Just select the requested training level and you’re off!
I am already in good shape. Can I start at a higher level?
We recommend that even a trained person takes it slow during the first session. Get to know the machine and the right positions, and allow your body to get used to the sensation. It’s more intensive that you think. But if you’re in good shape, don’t hesitate to advance a bit faster!
Why do I sometimes experience a slight headache after a training session?
Some people experience a slight headache after their first few training sessions. This is usually the result of a less than ideal position on the vibration plate. Your body is supposed to absorb the vibrations. If you feel your head vibrating during the exercise, try repositioning your body slightly in order to find the right position. And remember, fitvibe gets your metabolism going, so make sure you have eaten and drunk a bit before your session.
How often can I train on fitvibe?
There is no real limit, apart from common sense. A vibration plate is a serious machine, so use it wisely. As a guideline, using fitvibe once a week is fun, twice is maintenance, thrice is building up!
How does the fitvibe Vibration Plate get my muscles to contract automatically?
Every muscle has specialized fibers that register even the minutest changes in length of the muscle. Vertical vibrations cause the muscles to change length, so these specialized muscles fibers cause a jerk reflex, thereby contracting and relaxing at a fast pace.
Does the fitvibe Vibration Plate help against osteoporosis?
Yes! Bone density depends on 4 factors: genetics, nutrition, vertical stress, and hormones. fitvibe increases stress on the bones and releases key hormones. The device therefore has the potential to prevent bone degradation and osteoporosis. Please be advised that osteoporosis is a disease. A BMD below 70mg/ml constitutes an absolute counter indication.
Does the fitvibe Vibration Plate help against cellulite?
Yes! fitvibe increases the subcutaneous micro-circulation. In addition, a person training on fitvibe will burn more body fat and improve his muscle tone. The skin is in effect pulled back to make the skin look smoother.
Does the fitvibe Vibration Plate help against arthrosis?
fitvibe’s main advantage for people suffering from arthrosis, is its low threshold and its low impact nature. Arthrosis patients should always train on fitvibe under medical guidance and with a slow and gradual build-up. An example: you could start with a mild calf exercise for 30 seconds. Wait for 24 hours and try the same exercise twice, with an ample resting period between the two exercises.
I have an implant. Should I be extra careful?
Indeed! We recommend you always make an appointment with your specialist – just to make sure. Often specialists will even recommend you to use the vibration plate, but this depends entirely on the nature and the position of your implant.
How can I compare the quality of different Vibration plates, and why are 200$ systems inadequate?
Most manufactures approach Whole Body Vibration primarily from the perspective of physical exercise. They do not understand the powerful effects of Whole Body Vibration on your entire body, nervous, hormonal and skeleton system. Machines from the supermarket are not optimized and designed to deal with all the possible effects of regular usage. Differences between quality vibration devices and cheap devices are in the nature of the vibrations; the sound a devices makes, its stability, durability and ease-of-use. Vibrations delivered from the motor(s) of cheap devices do not reach the power level needed for physiological effects; at best they’ll result in a massage effect! A vibration device should be solid enough to generate the right, vertical vibrations with you on it. fitvibe’s built-in coach will even show you a complete and tailor-made exercise program, adapted to your preferences! For a good overview of the market, please contact your local distributor.
Does the fitvibe Vibration Plate increase my flexibility, my agility?
For general muscle flexibility, performing one stretch for each muscle group on fitvibe will be enough to maintain your current muscle length. Holding each position for 30 seconds up to 90 seconds is enough. For this purpose you best choose moderate frequencies.
When engaging in a stretch and flexibility routine, safety is always the first priority. Listen to what your body tells you, if a position feels uncomfortable in a joint area, or is causing stress in an unrelated muscle group, modify your exercise and seek guidance.
Will the fitvibe Vibration Plate increase my blood circulation locally or over my whole body?
Your blood circulation will improve locally and depends largely on the position you assume, i.e. the exercise that you perform.
When I combine the fitvibe Vibration Plate with cardio training, should I do the fitvibe session first?
The best is to start of with a fitvibe Vibration Plate session. This way, you will be properly warmed up before your cardio training. The release of hormones in your body during your fitvibe session will help you to train more efficiently on your bike or on the treadmill. And after your cardio training the fitvibe is there for your cooling down exercises!
How does the built-in Personal Coach build up my training schedule?
The Personal Coach is a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use software program that helps you to get the right training exercises. You access it through the intuitive display. The Personal Coach takes 4 parameters into consideration: frequency, amplitude, time and posture (position on the fitvibe Vibration Plate). He will start you off with simple exercises to go to more challenging routines, e.g. from a high squat to a low one. Frequency, amplitude and the total duration of the training will gradually be built up. In contrast your time to rest between the exercises will decrease.
Can I train on fitvibe Vibration Plate with my bare feet?
Of course, you can! It is even more efficient and intense, as the soles of your shoes would absorb part of the vibrations. However, many people find it comforting to train with their shoes on, because of this absorption effect. In addition the sole acts as a stabilizer.
The exercises that I do with the straps, are they effective?
Obviously most exercises using the straps are harder to do. It is vital that you keep the straps tight and that you do not move during the exercise. In addition it is advised to increase fitvibe Vibration Plate's amplitude in order to obtain the best results.
When performing exercises on fitvibe Vibration Plate, are there any differences compared to traditional strength training?
Scientific research has shown that training on a fitvibe Vibration Plate has similar effects as traditional power training. In fact, the positive effects come even faster. And vibration plate training certainly is more efficient. In a conventional training session, only 40% of the muscle fibers are exercised; with Controlled Whole Body Vibration or cWBV training that percentage nears the 100% mark. And it is not only the muscle tissue that reacts. Application of WBV also has a positive effect on tendon tissue, bone tissue, the nervous system and hormonal balances. Be aware that the heart is the most important muscle. And although fitvibe Vibration Plate trains the heart somewhat, it is advised to combine fitvibe Vibration Plate with cardio training.
Can the regeneration hormones produced after vibration training have harmful effects?
No, as these hormones are a natural product of the body. It is a natural process that also occurs when you perform other sports. The advantage of fitvibe Vibration Plate is that it releases these hormones without an extreme physical result.
Can vibrations be harmful?
Whole Body Vibration is an engineering term. It involves shaking or jolting of the human body through a supporting surface (usually a seat or the floor), for example when driving or riding on a vehicle along an unmade road, operating earthmoving machines or standing on a structure attached to a large, powerful, fixed machine which is impacting or vibrating. It has a negative connotation. Controlled WBV aims to harness the positive effects of WBV, with a fixed and constant amplitude, and a fixed and well-balanced frequency range. Additionally, fitvibe’s Personal Coach explains and visualizes the right posture for each exercise. fitvibe vibration plates are designed with the user’s safety and health as paramount priorities.
Using the “high” mode is harder. Is it also more effective?
In vibration training 4 parameters are to be considered: frequency, amplitude, time and posture (position on the fitvibe). The amplitude of the training should gradually be built up. Training at a higher amplitude means that the stress on your body is heavier, making you stronger. Training at high amplitudes should not be exaggerated. Listen to your body!
If I quit training after a number of intensive training weeks, how long will the effects last?
Like in all sports, a person with a better basic fitness level will enjoy the effects of training for a longer time. As a guideline, using fitvibe once a week is fun, twice is maintenance, thrice is building up! So the best solution is to keep doing the vibe!
Can I replace my entire fitness program with a fitvibe program?
We wouldn’t recommend that. fitvibe Vibration Plate is an amazing and multifunctional training device, but stamina is only gained in combination with cardio training. The best is to start of with a fitvibe session. This way, you will be properly warmed up before your cardio training. The release of hormones in your body during your fitvibe Vibration Plate session will help you to train more efficiently on your bike or on the treadmill. And after your cardio training the fitvibe Vibration Plate is there for your cooling down exercises!
