Healthy Fast Food
 7/18/2008 by Mark Osenga

With the fight against obesity ever raging, and people looking for a scapegoat to blame their frustration against, the fast food industry has come under heavy fire lately. There is some truth to how bad fast food is. It’s highly processed with large amounts of unhealthy fats and other factors to be wary of. Some have even tried to promote themselves as a healthy alternative, and such advertising has been harshly criticized to the point where it was pulled. Is it all that bad? To some extent it’s crap food, but with the push for responsibility, many fast food chains have taken a decent effort to offer alternatives to just fries and a burger. Keep in mind; French fries are still the number one ordered thing at fast food restaurants.

With this in mind, that the local fast food joints shouldn’t be your mainstay when eating and living healthy, the times that you’re traveling or stuck without much hope of good solid food choices, here are some options when stuck. So even though you may want to indulge in guilty pleasures, and trust me when you do, most of the time it really never tastes as good as you thought it would if you haven’t eaten it in a long time. With a plan in place and real options to help you stick to it, walking into the fast food world may not move you forward to your goals, but at least it won’t move you backwards.

McDonald’s

The big chain that everyone knows and the easiest to find, but can it be healthy?

Premium Grilled Chicken Classic Sandwich w/o Mayonnaise Dressing Serving Size: 7.5 oz (215 g) 370 calories, 4.5g fat, 51g carb (3g fiber), 32g protein, 1120 sodium

California Cobb Salad with Grilled Chicken w/ Low-fat Balsamic Vinaigrette Serving Size: 11.7 oz (335 g) 320 calories, 14g fat, 15g carb (4g fiber), 35g protein, 1850 sodium

Burger King

Chicken Whopper w/o mayo 570 calories, 48g carb (4g fiber), 38g protein, 11g fat, 1,410mg sodium

Fire-Grilled Shrimp Caesar Salad w/ Garlic-Parmesan Toast/Fat-Free Honey Mustard Dressing. 320 calories, 36g carb (2g fiber), 22g protein, 13g fat, 1,240mg sodium

Taco Bell

Grilled Steak Soft Taco 170 calories, 21g carb (2g fiber), 11g protein, 5g fat, 560mg sodium Gordita Supreme, Chicken 230 calories, 28g carbs (2g fiber), 15g protein, 6g fat, 510mg sodium Bean Burrito 350 calories, 56g carb (9g fiber), 13g protein, 8g fat, 1,220mg sodium Fiesta Burrito, Chicken 350 calories, 49g carb (4g fiber), 16g protein, 9g fat, 1,100mg sodium

Subway Sandwiches

Billed by heavy advertisement as a healthy alternative, but only if you watch what you add to the sandwich, meaning no mayo, oil or cheese and only ordering 6” subs versus going larger. 6” Roast Beef 290 calories, 45g carb (4g fiber), 24g protein, 5g fat, 920mg sodium 6” Oven-Roasted Chicken Breast 330 calories, 47g carb (4g fiber), 24g protein, 5g fat, 1,020mg sodium

These are the best suggestions, not a ton right? Well it is fast food we’re dealing with here and as you can see the one thing we can’t avoid is the super high amounts of sodium. Those on sodium restricted diets will have a tougher time since there is a lot of hidden salt in these highly processed suggestions. So with this information in hand, there’s no reason to just give up on your goals and down a burger and fries when stuck in a fast food restaurant.
